A Vision for Fredericton’s Future

Fredericton 2026 - Safe, Connected, Prosperous

This platform outlines the key priorities that will guide our work to strengthen our city, support residents, grow our economy, and ensure Fredericton continues to thrive for years to come.

Safe

Ensuring a safe community in Fredericton:

  • SUPPORTING PUBLIC SAFETY AND CRIME MEASURES

  • EMERGENCY RESPONSE MODERNIZATION

  • ADVANCING CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION AND RESILIENCY

Safety goes beyond a feeling, it means being free from danger, or harm. It means neighbourhoods, businesses, streets and trails that are safer, brighter, and more welcoming for everyone. The Fredericton Police Force have seen a rise in calls for service over the past 5 years and the city has responded by hiring more frontline officers with strengthened patrol routes, deploying the Community Safety Services Unit (CSSU), and creating a Public Safety Task Force. It will be essential for Fredericton to implement the Task Force recommendations to address the root causes of these issues including a comprehensive youth strategy. Safety also means adequately staffed fire protection, emergency preparedness, and ongoing improvements, guided by public input and safety priorities with data-driven resource allocation to ensure efficiencies and maximum impact.

Increasing occurrences of extreme weather, including major flooding and intense storms, also make climate change adaptation a top priority. The city is already investing in upgrading culverts, protecting water systems, and naturalizing shorelines. Regional cooperation will be essential to ensure that the City of Fredericton is environmentally and fiscally sustainable.

Connected

Connected to you, Connected to services, Connected to each other:

  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • IMPROVING COMMUNICATION AND ACCESSIBILITY

  • BUILDING ON TRANSIT AND ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION INVESTMENTS

A Connected Fredericton supports an inclusive, culturally diverse community, fostering social harmony, driving innovation, and enhancing creativity through varied perspectives. It builds empathy, strengthens social cohesion, and ensures everyone feels valued and respected, which leads to better problem-solving, stronger economic growth, and a more resilient, vibrant society. Events and places in Fredericton will celebrate the city’s growing cultural diversity while reinforcing civic pride and raising the City’s international profile as an attractive waterfront city!

A fine-tuned communication strategy will meet residents where they are to create a more accessible and responsive local government, connecting community members with city services and support from partners. Reporting our success on a quarterly basis and seeking your engagement in future strategic decisions will also build trust and support accountability.

Fostering a connected city from North to South, including old and new neighbourhoods and newly amalgamated areas will build unity and a feeling of community while maintaining mobility with transit and active transportation expansion. Extending the City’s network of trails and other cycling facilities will be prioritized, creating more north-south connections within the network.

Prosperous

Driving prosperity for all residents:

  • INVESTING IN RECREATION AND CULTURAL INFRASTUCTURE

  • ADDRESSING HOUSING AFFORDABILITY AND AVAILABILITY

  • ENCOURAGING LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Our greatest resource is our people. A prosperous community means all of us can meet our basic needs. It means Food security, Water Safety, Affordable Housing. It also means our city is open for business, tourism and opportunity. The relationship between housing and economic development is crucial. With a strong and diverse Fredericton, the city will continue to serve as the centre of the economy for the capital region. As we strive for growth, attract businesses, industries and investment, in a strategic, collaborative approach, new jobs and a stimulated local economy can lead to a more stable housing market.

Recognizing the intricate interplay of economic, social, and regulatory factors, we need to emphasize the importance of a comprehensive strategy that addresses our specific needs as a City. By collaborating with the business community, local organizations, and strategic partners, Fredericton can be a city that prioritizes wellbeing and sets up our citizens for success.
